Poltergeists, Egyptian myths, and a series of murders make 1898 a year Sherlock Holmes will never forget. From Camden Town to the diamond district, no part of London is safe. It will take all his skills if Holmes is to keep himself, Doctor Watson, and their friends free from harm. He doesn’t need any distractions. What a time for Lady Beatrice to be trapped in a volatile Paris.

Sherlock Holmes and The Other Woman edition by Geri Schear Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Ms. Schear has done it again--her first book was exceptional; this one is even better.

She captures the feel of the age extremely well. She does an even better job of creating compelling characters. Her portrayal of a Sherlock in love is sympathetic and gently amusing--here is a man bewildered by the fact that he actually loves his wife (although he cannot bring himself to use the word "love.")

The plot itself is compelling, with red herrings, and apparent red herrings that are actually vital to the solution.

There are some glitches with wording, but nothing that I, a stern grammarian, found too off-putting.

All I can say is "More, please!" I eagerly await her next book.

Sherlock Holmes and the Other Woman by Geri Schear

*** I am trying hard to avoid spoilers ***

I do feel that I should point out that this is definitely non-canon. That said, the author has taken time to pinpoint the chronology of this adventure. Using Historical reference, this case takes place during the terrible Dreyfus Affair. Using canonical references, DANC takes place towards the end of this adventure. Canonically, this case could be “The Case of the two Coptic Patriarchs” referred to in passing by Watson in RETI.

Holmes has married the enigmatic Lady Beatrice, the goddaughter of Queen Victoria. It is touted as a “marriage of convenience” and both keep their separated living quarters. But as the story moves along it becomes clear that both really care a lot for each other.

With the Dreyfus Affair raging in an unstable France, Holmes is called home by Mycroft. Lady B stays behind, as her friend Émile Zola is also facing arrest.

Holmes takes a case for Mrs. Alice Prentiss. Alice is a professional translator as she speaks several languages and has knowledge of Latin and Greek. There are noises at night and things have been taken and then show up in odd places. Alice thinks her home in Camden Town is haunted.

The case seems rather easy to solve, but further surprises are ahead. Holmes learns of two coins, called “The Coins of Our Fathers” or “The Two Coptic Patriarchs.”

Supposedly blessed by Saint Mark who founded the Coptic Church in Egypt, the coins have a tremendous history. If the coins are real, and have documented Provence, they would be priceless. Although the Jewish dealers in Hatton Garden assure Holmes the coins are myth.

Yet one of them is murdered over the coins and the fleeing killer also shoots down a constable. A young woman is also murdered and she can be traced back to the major suspect.

The next murder is a cut to the heart for Holmes, Watson, and especially Lady Beatrice. Holmes vows to put an end to this business.

I really think I should say no more. This is an excellent book if you can read it as it is written, a kind of parallel universe Holmes. The pacing is steady and keeps your interest as it is fraught with death, danger, espionage, hidden treasure, and the cold evil of “The Other Woman…”

I give this masterpiece five plus stars.

Quoth the Raven…
This is the second of three (so far) books featuring Sherlock Holmes and the woman identified as his “wife”, Lady Beatrice. In this book, set one year after the first, Holmes becomes involved in a convoluted affair wherein he brushes with the occult – 1890’s style. Along the way, he becomes involved in this version of the Untold Case, “The Two Coptic Patriarchs”.

As I mentioned in my review of the first Lady Beatrice volume, “A Biased Judgement”, I disagree with the notion that Holmes and Lady Beatrice are actually married. He respects her, and he may even have feelings for her, but the actual marriage is a later construct of Ms. Schear, and those parts related and referring to the marriage have been added to the original text by Editor Schear.

There is a long history of constructing romantic relationships for Holmes – see my review of “A Biased Judgement for more extensive information about this, as well as how I rationalize acceptance of the accurate parts of the narratives, while explaining away the parts that have been added by later editors. Initially, I hadn’t intended to read these three books, as they represent and “Alternate Universe” Holmes that doesn’t fit in with the vast number of other stories that color within the lines. However, having read and thoroughly enjoyed a number of Ms. Schear’s traditional Holmes tales in various other volumes, such as “The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories”, “Beyond Watson”, and “Sherlock Holmes Before Baker Street”, I knew that she is a wonderful writer, capturing both the correct voice and providing some excellent plot twists. Therefore, I gave these three Lady Beatrice books a chance. And while I’ve noted for my own Chronology the places where statements about Lady Beatrice and the marriage are incorrect, I happily include the other sections as well written and well-plotted.

I’m a big fan of Ms. Schear’s traditional Holmes adventures, and I can’t say enough to encourage her to keep writing them. She’s a wonderful writer, with a great feeling for plot. Based on that admiration, I also recommend her books featuring Lady Beatrice – with the caveat that I don’t completely accept them, and in my own Chronology, there are significant parts that are disregarded and explained away as fiction, written by Ms. Schear and inserted into the original texts to satisfy her own agenda. With that in mind, and with the understanding that I’ll approach future Lady Beatrice tales in the same way, I look forward to more.
ok, is there a prequel?
Nearly as good as first story
A really good read. Would happily have gone right on to another of her books.
This has the potential to be a great series. Loved the first book, great story premise, good historical details, riveting mystery BUT it was the relationship that surprised both main characters that made it distinctive. This book, although again was excellent story line, lacked some of the heat I would liked to have seen.
